为保障全世界儿童的权益，国际民主妇女联合会1949年11月在莫斯科召开执委会会议，决定将每年6月1日作为国际儿童节（Internationa lChildren＇s Day）。1950年4月，国际民主妇女联合会又通过决议，号召下属妇女组织在保护儿童生命免受新战争危险、要求削减军事预算和增加儿童健康与教育费用的口号下，纪念国际儿童节。
自国际儿童节设立以来，世界上大多数国家、国际组织采取了一系列措施，以促进儿童保护、福利和教育事业的发展。
儿童是人类的未来和希望，儿童的安全、生存和发展是人类进步的先决条件。国际社会应在消灭战争、消灭贫困以及保护儿童免受艾滋病侵害等方面付出更大的努力，为儿童的健康成长创造一个安全、卫生、富足、快乐的生存环境。
